Landscape Construction: Pavers

Roy Jeffrey

Use pavers or crushed stone instead of asphalt to infiltrate water into the ground.

Pavers are an increasingly popular landscape technique to cover parking areas, sidewalks and terraces. They add attractive design features to the landscape while at the same time enhancing the ability of rain water to infiltrate into the ground. Work at the Jordan Cove project demonstrated a reduction of stormwater runoff and loss of pollutants when using pavers and crushed stone instead of asphalt. When using pavers and crushed stone, take steps to ensure a solid subsurface of sand and/or gravel so as to minimize expansion and contraction under the pavers during cold weather.
